Performing arts should have winter tryouts
Every sport in high schools are separated into seasons: fall, spring and winter. The performing arts teams such as cheer, dance and colorguard take place over the fall and winter season. Because of students participating in different sports in those seasons, I felt as though a second tryout date should be held for these different activities to give them an opportunity to also be involved. I personally struggle with writing opinions because it involves writing my own thoughts and ideas rather than organizing the thoughts of other people. However, I have pushed myself to become better and write them simply to challenge myself to grow. Specifically, this story helped me work with the clarity of my writing and simply stating my opinions with reasons to back it up.
Social distancing needs to be better practiced
After the initial COVID-19 shutdown I was extremely annoyed at the people who were not practicing proper social distancing rules because I just wanted to go back to my normal life. This was the first time I experienced interviewing people over the phone from my room. I was able to create a graphic since I was not prepared to have photos for a story like this. We were also able to check out the giant Mac computers from the lab to bring home so we could easily continue to work on our stories. I also used the opportunity to learn how to use Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro.
Selfie culture: a hidden enemy in society
Everywhere I go in the school, people have their phones out. Never is there a moment in time where someone does not have their phone out to take a picture or video of their surroundings. Personally I believed selfie culture was taking over our world and creating an environment where students couldn't not have their phones for documentation purposes. I decided to write a different type of opinion story that was based around using other peoples quotes to support my opinion. It was still very much an opinion story and in a way was structured similarly to an argumentative essay. I made sure to include both sides of the debate and use this story as a tool for readers to form their own opinions.
